Egypt is a fantastic country steeped in history, mythology and archaeological wonders. As a multicultural hub with a beautifully warm climate, it attracts many expats. However, following 10 years of significant political turmoil and civil unrest, many people are questioning whether or not it is safe to move to Egypt from the UK.
Where to Move in Egypt
Over 8 million people have relocated to Egypt from around the world. Some of the most popular destinations in Egypt for expats include the capital city of Cairo, Alexandria, Giza, Shubra El Kheima, Port Said, Suez, Luxor, and Mansoura.
FCDO advice should always be taken on board when considering where it is safe to live in Egypt and local travel upon your arrival.
The Locals
The locals in Egypt tend to be friendly and welcoming. Although the first language in Egypt is Arabic, many Egyptians in Cairo, Alexandria, and tourist hotspots such as Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh will be able to speak some level of English and will try their hardest to communicate.
Military Presence
Due to the previous civil unrest, security and military presence in Egypt is heightened and this is something that you should be prepared for. Whilst seeing heavily armed officers can be somewhat intimidating, remember they are there for your protection and safety.
There are currently a number of additional checks being made on the ground in Egypt. It is likely that your vehicle will be checked, inside and out, when passing through checkpoints on the road. Personal electronic devices may also be checked at airports or around places of public gathering.
Egypt Crime Rates
The crime rates in Egypt are generally low, however crimes such as pickpocketing and opportunistic theft are something to be aware of, particularly where there are heavy crowds of tourists. It is wise not to carry a large amount of cash on your person.
Sexual harassment in Egypt is something that is hotly debated. Female expats are advised to travel in a group and to avoid being out at night alone, in order to err on the side of caution. As a woman, dressing conservatively will help you to assimilate into the cultural norms of this Muslim country.
Good progress is being made by the Egyptian Government which is aiming to address gender bias, but there are still reports of inappropriate behaviours – which shows there is still lots of work to be done.
