Moving to Malaysia from the UK: A Complete Guide

Important information you need to know when moving to Malaysia

Last updated: June 2026 | Author: Gerson Moving Services team

If you’re moving to Malaysia from the UK – for work in Kuala Lumpur, retirement in Penang, or a family relocation to Johor Bahru – the two questions that matter most are usually the simplest ones: what will it actually cost to get your furniture there, and what’s going to hold up at customs when it arrives. Most guides to moving to Malaysia answer everything except those two questions in any real detail. This one answers both, alongside the visa, vehicle, and pet information you’ll also need.

This guide covers what to expect at every stage of a UK-to-Malaysia move: the documents Malaysian customs require, what it costs to ship a household’s worth of furniture and belongings, what you can and can’t bring, and what happens with a car, motorcycle, or pet.

Important Information You Need to Know When Moving to Malaysia

Malaysia is a common destination for UK nationals relocating for work, retirement, or family reasons, with the largest concentrations of expats in Kuala Lumpur, George Town (Penang), and Johor Bahru. A move to Malaysia from the UK is a sea freight move for the vast majority of households – there’s no land or short-haul route, and the volume involved in a typical household move makes air freight impractical except for small, urgent items.

Before booking, it helps to have a working sense of three things: the documents you’ll need ready before your goods are collected, roughly what the move will cost for your volume of belongings, and the items that need special handling or simply can’t travel. The sections below cover all three.

What Does It Cost to Ship Your Furniture and Belongings to Malaysia?

This is the question most people searching for “furniture removals to Malaysia” or “house removals to Malaysia” actually want answered, so here it is directly – along with an honest note on why the figures you’ll see vary more on this route than on many others.

Groupage (shared container): From approx. £2,700 for a one- to two-bedroom volume of furniture and belongings, rising with volume. Your goods share container space with other customers’ shipments, which keeps the cost down but means the container sails only once it’s full – typically 8–12 weeks door-to-door. Groupage is the option most house removals to Malaysia use, because most household volumes don’t justify paying for a dedicated container outright.

Full container load (FCL): From approx. £4,650 for a three-bedroom household, rising with volume and whether you book a 20ft or 40ft container. Transit is typically 6–9 weeks – faster than groupage because your goods aren’t waiting on anyone else’s shipment to fill the container. If you’re moving a full house rather than a flat’s worth of furniture, FCL is usually the better value once you weigh up the time saved.

Air freight: Realistically only sensible for a small, specific volume – documents, a few suitcases, items you need in the first few weeks – rather than full household furniture. Transit is 5–10 days, but the cost per kilogram is several times higher than sea freight.

Why the published figures vary so much: If you compare quotes from different UK removal companies for the same Malaysia move, you’ll likely see groupage prices anywhere from approx. £2,700 to approx. £6,500, and FCL quotes that vary by a similar margin. Some of that gap is genuine – it reflects volume, packing service level, and whether insurance and destination handling are bundled into the headline price or charged separately. Some of it is just inconsistent quoting across the industry. Either way, the figures on this page (and on any other company’s website) are starting points for planning, not a number you should book against. A professional survey of your specific belongings is what produces a figure you can actually rely on – and it’s also how your move manager confirms what’s included before you commit to anything.

What drives your actual cost: Volume is the biggest factor, followed by packing service level (full pack, partial pack, or self-pack), origin and destination access (a lift in central Kuala Lumpur costs more to deliver to than a ground-floor house), and any items needing special handling – antiques, artwork, or a vehicle. Your move manager will walk through all of this with you after the survey, so the final cost reflects your move specifically rather than a generic household estimate.

Moving Household Goods and Personal Effects to Malaysia

Malaysian customs requires a specific set of documents before your household goods shipment can clear. Having these ready and accurate from the outset is the single biggest factor in whether your shipment clears smoothly or gets held for further checks.

Required documents:

  • Passport of the person importing the goods
  • A detailed moving inventory, in English, dated and signed
  • Copy of the bill of lading (OBL) for sea freight, or air waybill (AWB) for air freight – your bill of lading is the shipping company’s official receipt and contract for your goods; you’ll need the original or a copy depending on the clearance method
  • Full contact address and details in Malaysia
  • Letter of employment or a copy of your work permit
  • A list of electrical items, with detailed specifications
  • Diplomatic exemption letter from Malaysia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (diplomats only)
  • Copy of Malaysian ID (returning Malaysian citizens only)

Your move manager coordinates this documentation with you well ahead of your collection date, so nothing is missing when your shipment reaches Malaysian customs.

Additional Removal Advice for Removals to Malaysia

A few specific rules catch people out more than the general documentation list above:

  • You (the owner) must be present in Malaysia when your goods are imported. Malaysian customs ties the import to your physical presence, not just your paperwork.
  • All shipments are subject to customs examination. This is standard, not a sign of a problem – but it’s why an accurate, detailed inventory matters more here than a vague one.
  • Wooden packaging must be ISPM 15 fumigated. This is an international standard for treating wood packaging material to prevent pest transfer, and Malaysian customs checks for the compliance mark. Your removal company handles this as standard.
  • Goods owned for six months or more qualify for duty-free import as used personal effects. Anything owned for less than six months is treated as new and subject to customs duty.
  • Some ports require an electrical board permit, and electrical items need to be listed individually with name, model, make, serial number, and year – a generic “household electricals” line on your inventory isn’t sufficient.
  • Antiques, artwork, carpets, and paintings need separate paperwork: an import permit, a photograph of the item, a valuation report, and a certificate of origin. If you’re bringing anything in this category, flag it to your move manager early, since this paperwork takes time to assemble.

Popular Destinations in Malaysia

The largest UK expat communities are concentrated in a handful of areas:

  • Kuala Lumpur: the capital, and home to most international employers, embassies, and English-medium schools
  • George Town (Penang): a popular choice for retirees and remote workers, with a long-established expat community
  • Ipoh (Perak): smaller and lower-cost, attracting people who want a quieter base
  • Shah Alam (Selangor): close to Kuala Lumpur, popular with families

Where you’re moving to within Malaysia affects delivery logistics more than cost – central Kuala Lumpur deliveries often involve lift access and building permissions that your move manager and the in-country partner will coordinate ahead of your delivery date.

Moving Your Car Or Motorcycle

Shipping a UK car to Malaysia is technically possible but rarely makes financial sense. Malaysia imposes import duty of approximately 170–300% of a vehicle’s CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) value for vehicles valued under RM 20,000, plus additional taxes of approximately 10–20% on top. For most vehicles, the combined tax burden far exceeds the value of the car itself.

Malaysia drives on the left, the same as the UK, so right-hand drive UK vehicles aren’t blocked by a road-rules mismatch the way they would be in a left-hand-drive destination – but the duty structure makes shipping a standard UK car uneconomical regardless. In practice, the large majority of UK nationals moving to Malaysia sell their car before leaving and buy locally.

If you do want to ship a vehicle:

  • Required documents: original passport copy, original vehicle registration copy, original insurance policy copy, a letter from the owner requesting import permission, and proof of ownership
  • One import permit is required per vehicle, issued by Malaysia’s Ministry of International Trade and Industry
  • Documentation must be submitted at least 7 days before vessel arrival for sea freight, or 2 days before arrival for air freight
  • A ministry exemption letter, where applicable, takes 7–14 working days to process

Motorcycles follow the same import framework and are subject to the same documentation requirements. Given the duty rates involved, this is worth discussing with your move manager before you commit to shipping any vehicle – they can talk through the realistic total cost so there are no surprises after the vehicle has already left the UK.

Relocating Your Pets to Malaysia

Bringing a cat or dog from the UK to Malaysia involves a mandatory quarantine period, and the rules differ between Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak) – so confirm which applies to your destination early, since this affects your planning timeline.

Required documents:

  • Certificate of vaccination
  • Import permit (apply well ahead of travel – permits are valid for 30 days, so timing matters)
  • Veterinary health certificate

Core requirements:

  • Rabies vaccination, valid for at least two weeks before travel
  • Microchip
  • Owner’s passport or Malaysian ID
  • Complete Malaysian address details

Quarantine:

  • Cats and dogs arriving from the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Japan, or Sweden are subject to mandatory quarantine on arrival
  • In East Malaysia, quarantine can run from 30 to 180 days depending on the case – a significantly longer and more variable window than most UK owners expect
  • House quarantine may be possible after 30 days, but requires a formal application
  • Quarantine space must be reserved in advance – you cannot assume a space will be available on arrival
  • Owners are responsible for providing pet food for the quarantine duration, and visits are permitted during office hours and weekends
  • Arrivals after 10pm incur a flat overtime charge of USD 80

Because of the import permit’s 30-day validity and the potential for an extended East Malaysia quarantine, pet relocation should be planned well before you finalise your furniture shipping dates. Specialist pet relocators handle the import permit, quarantine booking, and transport – your move manager can refer you to one experienced on this route.

Restricted & Dutiable / Taxable Items

Generally Permitted

Used household goods, furniture, clothing, kitchenware, books, and personal electronics can be imported duty-free under Malaysia’s used personal effects exemption, provided the items have been owned and in personal use for six months or more. Items younger than that are treated as new and are subject to import duty.

Restricted: Subject to Permits, Duty, or Inspection

  • Alcohol, wine, and tobacco: A special import permit is required and is genuinely difficult to obtain. If granted, expect high duties and taxes. You must declare the type, quantity, origin, purchase value, and alcohol percentage of everything you bring. Free import limits without a permit are tightly capped: 200 cigarettes, 225g of other tobacco, and 1 litre of alcohol.
  • Antiques, artwork, carpets, and paintings: Require an import permit, a photograph, a valuation report, and a certificate of origin (see the documentation section above).
  • DVDs, CDs, and other recorded media: Subject to a content censorship screening, with the screening fee charged to the owner.
  • Restricted dog breeds (including bull mastiff, bull terrier, Doberman, Rottweiler, and Belgian/German shepherds): require a pedigree certificate, microchip, and a government veterinary inspection of your Malaysian residence before import is approved.
  • New electrical items and goods under six months old: subject to standard customs duty.

Prohibited: Cannot Be Shipped at All

  • Narcotics and non-branded drugs – trafficking carries the death penalty in Malaysia, and this is treated with absolute seriousness at every port
  • Firearms, ammunition, and explosives
  • Offensive weapons, including flick knives
  • Indecent videos and materials
  • Counterfeit currency
  • Radio transmitters and cordless phones
  • Meat, poultry, and other animal products
  • Plants, seeds, and protected species items
A complete, accurate, and honestly declared inventory is the single most effective way to avoid your shipment being held for additional inspection at Malaysian customs – regardless of which shipping method you choose.

Moving to Malaysia from the UK – FAQs

Groupage (shared container) for a one- to two-bedroom volume of furniture typically starts from approx. £2,700 and takes 8–12 weeks door-to-door. A full container load (FCL) for a three-bedroom household typically runs from approx. £4,650, with transit of 6–9 weeks. Published prices vary more between providers on this route than on many others, so a written survey quote is the only reliable figure for your specific move.

Full container load (FCL) shipments typically take 6–9 weeks from collection to delivery at your Malaysian address. Groupage (shared container) shipments take longer, typically 8–12 weeks, because your goods wait until the container is filled with other customers’ shipments before it sails. Add time on top of sea transit for Malaysian customs clearance, which is more straightforward when your documentation is complete and accurate from the outset.

You do not need a general import permit for used personal and household effects owned for six months or more, but you do need a complete set of supporting documents: your passport, a detailed inventory in English, a copy of the bill of lading or air waybill, your Malaysian contact address, and a copy of your work permit or letter of employment. Returning Malaysian citizens need a copy of their Malaysian ID instead of a work permit. Antiques, artwork, and carpets need a separate import permit, photograph, valuation report, and certificate of origin.

Technically yes, but it is rarely cost-effective. Malaysia charges import duty of approximately 170-300% of a vehicle’s CIF value (for vehicles valued under RM 20,000), plus additional taxes of approximately 10-20% on top. Most UK nationals moving to Malaysia sell their car before leaving and buy locally instead. If you have a reason to bring a specific vehicle, your move manager can talk you through the realistic cost before you commit to shipping it.

Cats and dogs arriving from the UK are subject to mandatory quarantine in Malaysia. In Peninsular Malaysia this is typically a fixed period at an approved quarantine facility; in East Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak) quarantine can run from 30 to 180 days depending on the case. You will need a veterinary health certificate, proof of rabies vaccination valid for at least two weeks before travel, a microchip, and an import permit arranged in advance, since space at quarantine facilities must be reserved ahead of arrival.

Restricted items requiring permits or incurring duty include alcohol, tobacco and cigarettes above small personal allowances, antiques and artwork, and certain restricted dog breeds. Banned items include narcotics, firearms and weapons, indecent material, counterfeit currency, and meat, poultry, plant, or seed products. DVDs, CDs, and other recorded media may be screened by Malaysian customs for content, with the screening fee charged to the owner. A complete, accurate inventory is the best way to avoid your shipment being held for inspection.
