It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and it is fast approaching so we thought we would make it easier for you to decide which Christmas markets to go to this year by creating a list of the best Christmas markets to visit in the world.

Strasbourg Christmas Market, France

  • Also known as The Chrtistkindlesmarik and located in Place Broglie. The market is referred to as the capital of Christmas. This year it is opening on November 26th, 2021, the market dates back to the 12th century and official documents state in 1570 the market was held 3 days before Christmas.
  • There are a variety of markets on offer here alongside the traditional one, with historic and alternative markets within walking distance of each other.
  • Department stores in the area put on magnificent displays and the facades of nearby buildings are topped with festive bears.
  • It is advised to arrive at the market early as the crowds can get very busy.

Salzburg Christmas Market, Austria

  • Dating back to 1491 Salzburg Christmas Market is one of the best Christmas markets in Europe, it’s also known as one of the most beautiful markets in the world with stunning decorations bringing the Christmas feel.
  • Open from November 18th and closing 26th December you’ve got plenty of time to listen to the local choirs ranging from schools to adult choirs that travel far and wide to perform in the market.
  • The forest at Hellbrunn Palace has over 400 decorated trees and there is a Christmas world with a petting zoo designed for children along with a Christmas post office allowing people to send off their Christmas lists to Father Christmas.
  • There are plenty of local artisan stalls to explore from food, drinks, and decorations.

 

Toronto Christmas Market, Canada

  • While not in Europe ,Toronto’s Christmas Market is one of the best Christmas Markets in the world.
  • Held in the Distillery district you can witness the giant decorated Christmas Tree and thousands of lights giving a warm and cosy feel to the market.
  • Held between 18th November and 31st December the market hosts the local community shops and bars and there is a great feeling of community in the area. Like every market, stalls are selling a variety of food, drinks, and holiday novelty items.

 

Prague Christmas Markets, Czechia

  • There are three markets to visit when you are in Prague, the Old Town Square the Wenceslas Square and Prague Castle, they are all a five-minute walk from each other so easily and plenty to explore
  • The old town square and Wenceslas Square market open 27th November with Prague Castle opening 25th November. All the markets close on January 6th so you can keep exploring after Christmas to keep the festive period going.
  • If you’re planning on Prague look out for the theme announcement at the end of November as every year has a new theme and it is then decorated to match the theme. There is a 19-meter-tall Christmas tree in the Old Square and there is a light switch on every day at 4:30 pm.
  • All food and drinks are locally sourced with their plates and cups also being eco-friendly at 100% biodegradable.
  • If you’re bringing your children, then there is also a petting zoo you can enjoy but be sure to wrap up as the average temperature is -2oc and there is likely to be heavy snowfall this time of year.

Nuremberg Christmas Market, Germany

  • Another market with a long history as this market dates to 1628, the market is opened by the ‘Christkind’ who has golden curly hair, a golden crown and white gown, this is usually played by a local young adult who does it for two years.
  • All the lanes are lit with festive lights and decorations getting everyone in the Christmas Spirit.
  • There are over 10 stalls to browse around with handmade decorations and culinary treats on offer.

 

Brussels Christmas Market, Belgium

  • There are over 2.5 million visitors a year to the winter wonderland that is Brussels Christmas Market, open from 26th November until 2nd January gives you plenty of time to explore the hidden wonders of the market.
  • Such wonders include the life-size Nativity and manger scene, a majestic tree, skating rink and sounds and light displays from the Grand Palace.
  • There will also be a light dome set up in the pedestrian area with space for performances, films, and concerts.
  • St. Catherine’s Church and the Visage will have video mapping across the building, transforming them into art.

Copenhagen Christmas Market, Germany

  • There are two markets to visit New Kings Square and High Bridge Square, both open on 12th November and close on December 22nd so you’ve got just over a month to discover Germanys best Christmas Market
  • Both Markets are very traditional German Christmas Markets, with wooden stalls selling traditional handmade gifts. With New Kings being held in a historic German Square.
  • At New Kings, you can also get a photograph with Father Christmas every Thursday to Sunday between 1 and 5 PM. This takes place Monday to Friday 3- 6 pm in High Bridge Square.
  • Both Markets are decorated beautifully with traditional decorations and lights to create a Christmas winter wonderland.
