Many people are enthralled by the warm welcome from the natives, even when visiting the country, whether in small towns or larger cities. As the 8th largest nation on the planet, the variety of things to see and do in Argentina could mean a new, exciting life for you and your family, whether you’re after the unmissable nightlife, sports and restaurants, or the stunning mountains, forests, and even deserts.

If you are considering a move to Argentina, there’s a wide range of things to research. You’ll want to know everything you can find about Argentina, what life is like there, and how to move. Like every international relocation, there are plenty of bureaucratic hurdles to navigate before you can settle in Argentina, including visas, work permits, and healthcare. To start you off, we’ve created a quick guide to moving to Argentina from the UK.

UK to Argentina Visa Requirements

If you are considering moving to Argentina from the UK, it’s important that you visit this incredible country before making any big decisions. Luckily, British nationals are able to travel from the UK to Argentina without a visa, granted that your visit doesn’t last more than 90 days and that the purpose is strictly for tourism purposes. Note that a valid UK passport is essential, and ensure that your passport has at least 6 months of validity remaining at the time of travel.

If you wish to work in Argentina after moving from the UK, you will need to apply for a work visa. If you are working for more than 3 months,  a temporary work visa will also grant you temporary residency in Argentina for your time there. This process will involve a criminal records check in both countries, as well as an official letter from your employer in Argentina confirming that they will hire you for at least 1 year.

Moving Household Goods And Personal Effects To Agentina

When planning your move to Argentina, you will typically need to prepare the following documentation:

  • Copy of your Passport Photo Page (Clear copy of the main identification page)
  • Argentine Customs Declaration Forms (Usually prepared by your moving company or customs broker in Argentina)
  • Copy of Visa / Residency Approval (if applicable) Required for non-Argentine citizens.
    • Temporary or permanent residency is usually needed to import household goods duty-free.
  • Detailed Inventory / Packing List
    • Must be in Spanish
    • Should be itemised and valued
    • Your moving company can prepare this, or you can complete one yourself
  • Alcohol Inventory (if applicable)
    • Alcohol imports are strictly regulated and may incur duties or restrictions
  • Original Bill of Lading (OBL) / Air Waybill (AWB)
    • Required if no telex release is issued
    • Typically handled by your moving company if they manage the full move
  • Argentine Tax Identification (CUIT/CUIL/CDI number)
    • Required for customs clearance
    • Your destination agent can assist if you don’t yet have one

Important Notes

  • Presence in Argentina:
    • You are usually required to be in the country at the time of customs clearance.
  • Used Household Goods Only:
    • Shipments must consist of used personal effects. New items may be subject to duties and taxes.
  • Timing Matters:
    • Documentation should be submitted well in advance to avoid:
      • Customs delays
      • Storage charges
      • Penalties or additional inspection fees
  • First-Time Import Rule:
    • Duty-free import is typically allowed only if:
      • You are relocating under a valid residency visa
      • This is your first shipment into Argentina under that status

Recommendation

We strongly recommend submitting all required documentation as early as possible. Delays in paperwork can result in missed shipments, additional charges, or complications with Argentine Customs. For your protection, shipments are generally not dispatched until all required documents are in place.

How to Move to Argentina

You will need to apply for a temporary residence visa to move to Argentina, before applying for permanent residence when you move to the country. If you have a relative that was born in Argentina then you may be able to apply for permanent residence before you decide on moving to the country.

When it comes to gaining permanent residency, this can be a more difficult process for UK expats moving to Argentina. The Argentinian government are fairly strict in permitting permanent residency to foreign entrants. To be considered, Brits will need to:

  • Already possess a work / temporary residence visa.
  • Provide a certificate of good conduct & proof of funds.
  • Make a financial contribution of  1,500,000 Argentine Pesos in production, commercial or service activity.

Shipping Your Belongings from the UK to Argentina

Moving from the UK to Argentina is a sea freight move, the journey from UK ports to Buenos Aires (Port of Buenos Aires) takes approximately 16–20 weeks by shared container (groupage) and 14–18 weeks for a full container load (FCL), routing via the South Atlantic.

Argentina’s customs authority (AFIP) requires a detailed inventory of all household goods before clearance. Used personal effects are generally imported duty-free under the Transfer of Residence allowance, provided items have been owned and in personal use for at least 6 months and you can demonstrate prior UK residency. New items are subject to Argentine import duty and VAT.

One detail worth knowing in advance: Argentina’s customs process can extend beyond the standard clearance window depending on inspection workload at port. Building an additional 2–4 weeks into your planning timeline is sensible.

Your move manager holds the documentation and stays in contact with the in-country partner in Buenos Aires throughout.

Cost of Living in Argentina

With their economic recovery still in progress, UK expats living in Argentina will find it a relatively cheap place to reside. This includes everyday expenses, like groceries and restaurant bills, as well as renting property, which can be as low as £175 a month for a one-bedroom apartment in the middle of a city. Of course, this is less dramatic when considering the lower average income in Argentina. Note that prices can soar in the capital of Buenos Aires so this could be a factor when deciding where to live in Argentina.
