A Guide to Relocating to Argentina

Last updated: 7 July 2026

Argentina isn’t a straightforward move to plan from a UK sitting room. The visa routes are specific, the customs process rewards patience over speed, and the practical questions – can I bring the car, what happens to the dog, what am I actually allowed to pack – don’t have obvious answers if you haven’t done this before.

This guide covers what you need to know before you commit to a date: visa and residency routes, how the shipping and customs process actually works, what life and cost of living look like once you’re there, and the specifics on vehicles, pets, and what you can and can’t bring. If you’ve already decided on Argentina and want the deeper mechanics of the removal itself – the exact customs form, the port X-ray process, how to time your shipment against your residency status – see our dedicated guide to shipping to Argentina, which goes further into that side than this page does.

UK to Argentina Visa Requirements

British nationals can visit Argentina without a visa for up to 90 days for tourism, provided your UK passport has at least 6 months’ validity remaining. That’s enough time to view properties, meet an employer, or get a feel for a city – but not enough to move on.

For anything beyond a visit, you’ll need one of the following:

  • Work visa: required for employment exceeding 3 months. You’ll need a confirmed job offer, an employer letter confirming at least 1 year of employment, and a clean criminal record check from both the UK and Argentina. A temporary work visa also grants temporary residency.
  • Independent work (rentista) visa: for those with a demonstrable independent income source, rather than local employment.
  • Digital Nomad Visa: for remote workers employed by a company outside Argentina. Requires proof of income and an employment or contract letter, and permits you to live and work in Argentina for up to 6 months, renewable.

Processing for temporary residency typically takes 3–6 months, so this is the first thing to start – not the last. If you’re aiming to move within the next 6 months, the visa application should already be in motion before you book a removal date.

Permanent residency, if that’s the eventual goal, generally requires an existing work or temporary residence visa, a good conduct certificate, proof of funds, and a financial contribution of 1,500,000 Argentine pesos. Permanent residents with Argentine-born relatives may be able to apply before relocating – worth checking with the Argentine consulate in London if this applies to you.

Argentina’s customs process is thorough, and the paperwork needs to be right the first time. The core documents you’ll need to provide:

  • Copy of your passport photo page
  • Argentine Customs Declaration Forms
  • Copy of your visa or residency approval
  • A detailed inventory of your belongings, itemised and valued in Spanish
  • An alcohol inventory, if you’re shipping any
  • The original Bill of Lading or Air Waybill
  • Your Argentine Tax Identification number (CUIT, CUIL, or CDI)

A few things catch UK movers out here. First, you need to be present in Argentina during customs clearance – this isn’t a process that can be completed entirely remotely. Second, shipments must consist of used personal effects; new items may attract duties, so if you’ve recently bought big-ticket items intending to bring them, keep receipts and expect questions. Third, duty-free import under the Transfer of Residence relief is only available for your first shipment under a valid residency visa – there’s no second attempt at the relief if you split your move into stages.

Submit your documentation as early as your visa status allows. Late or incomplete paperwork is the single biggest cause of delay at the Argentine end, and it’s avoidable with early preparation.

Shipping Your Belongings from the UK to Argentina

The standard route is sea freight from a UK port to Buenos Aires, travelling via the South Atlantic. Realistic timelines:

Shipping methodTypical transit time
Groupage (shared container)approx. 16–20 weeks door-to-door
Full container load (FCL)approx. 14–18 weeks door-to-door

These figures already build in customs clearance, which can extend a further 2–4 weeks beyond the standard window — Argentine port processes, including the mandatory X-ray inspection of all household goods shipments, are not something you can rush. The more precise and complete your Spanish-language inventory, the smoother that inspection tends to go; audio-visual equipment (TVs, computers, speakers) is the most common trigger for a follow-up physical inspection, so list these items individually with make and model.

As covered above, used personal effects are generally imported duty-free under the Transfer of Residence allowance, provided you’ve owned and used the items for at least 6 months and can demonstrate prior UK residency – and provided you’ve also met Argentina’s own 6-month residency threshold on the receiving end. Getting the sequencing of these two 6-month clocks right is one of the more easily missed details of an Argentina move; it’s worth raising with your move manager as soon as you have a residency application underway, so your shipment date can be planned around it rather than the other way round.

Cost of Living in Argentina

Argentina is, on the whole, more affordable than the UK, although Buenos Aires is noticeably more expensive than the rest of the country. How far your money goes will also depend on whether your income is in sterling, US dollars or Argentine pesos.

As a guide, renting a one-bedroom apartment outside Buenos Aires is often considerably cheaper than in the UK, while a similar apartment in Buenos Aires city centre currently averages around £575 per month, with properties outside the city centre averaging around £390 per month. Overall day-to-day costs such as groceries, transport and eating out also tend to be lower than in the UK, making Argentina an attractive destination for many expatriates despite recent economic volatility.

Living in Argentina

Argentina carries strong European cultural influences from waves of historical immigration – Italian and Spanish in particular – which shows up in food, architecture, and pace of life. People are, by reputation and by most accounts from UK movers we’ve worked with, warm, direct, and genuinely social; it’s a culture built around four daily meals and the conversation that comes with them, not just three functional stops for food.

There’s also a strong protective pride in local customs, art, cuisine, and sport – tango, football, and the asado (barbecue) aren’t tourist props, they’re daily life. For a new arrival, this can be one of the more rewarding parts of the move once the admin is behind you, and one of the more disorientating in the first few weeks if you haven’t been warned about it.

Moving Your Car or Motorcycle to Argentina

Shipping a UK car to Argentina is legally possible, but for most movers it isn’t worth doing.

  • Import duty: approx. 35% of the vehicle’s declared customs value. On a car worth £15,000, that’s roughly £5,250 in duty alone, before registration and inspection fees.
  • Right-hand drive: Argentina drives on the right, so a UK right-hand-drive car remains legal to register, but it’s an unusual sight on Argentine roads and can affect resale value later.
  • Re-registration: imported vehicles require a roadworthiness inspection (VTV – Verificación Técnica Vehicular) before they can be registered and driven.
  • Vehicle transport: if you do proceed, vehicle shipping is arranged as a separate logistics stream alongside your household removal, not folded into the same container — your move manager coordinates the two so they arrive on a workable schedule.

Our honest recommendation: unless the car has genuine sentimental or collector value, it’s rarely economical to ship. Most UK movers sell before leaving and buy locally – Buenos Aires and the other major cities have a well-supplied used car market, and it avoids months of import admin. Motorcycles follow the same duty structure; the calculation is the same, and classic or rare bikes are the main case where import still makes sense.

Relocating Your Pets to Argentina

Bringing a cat or dog from the UK to Argentina is straightforward on paper, provided the paperwork is completed in the right order and on time.

  • Microchip: ISO-standard 15-digit microchip required before any other step.
  • Rabies vaccination: must be current. If your pet hasn’t been vaccinated before, allow at least 30 days after vaccination before travel.
  • Official health certificate: issued by a UK Official Veterinarian (OV) via APHA (the Animal and Plant Health Agency), no more than 10 days before travel.
  • Internal parasite treatment: administered by a vet 1–5 days before travel.
  • Import permit: required from SENASA (Servicio Nacional de Sanidad y Calidad Agroalimentaria), Argentina’s agricultural health authority. Your vet or a specialist pet relocator can handle this application.

There’s no mandatory quarantine for cats and dogs travelling from the UK, provided all of the above is in order – but allow 6–8 weeks from start to finish to get the health certificate and permit process completed properly. This runs on its own timeline, separate from your household shipment, so it’s worth starting in parallel rather than leaving it until closer to your move date. Specialist pet relocators handle the logistics end to end; your move manager can refer you to a trusted partner as part of planning your move.

What Your Move Manager Handles Alongside the Removal

Beyond the container itself, a dedicated move manager is your primary contact throughout the parts of an Argentina move that tend to cause the most anxiety: sequencing your shipment against your residency timeline, coordinating the Spanish-language inventory and customs paperwork, and referring you to specialist partners for anything outside a standard household removal – currency exchange, pet relocation, or short-term storage if your Buenos Aires address isn’t ready when your container is.

Optional support available alongside your removal includes:

  • Currency exchange (typically better rates than a UK high street bank)
  • MoveProtect move liability cover
  • Home and school search, visa and immigration support, area orientation, and settling-in services
  • Container tracking, storage, furniture rental, and temporary accommodation if timelines don’t line up
  • Language and cultural training, and partner support for the practical side of settling in

None of this replaces the process – it’s there for the parts of an international move that a container alone doesn’t solve.

What You Can and Can't Ship to Argentina

Generally permitted

Personal household effects, furniture, clothing, books, declared electronics, musical instruments, artwork, kitchen equipment, sports equipment, and bicycles all move through Argentine customs routinely as part of a household goods shipment.

Restricted – requires declaration or a permit

  • Firearms and ammunition: an import permit from Argentine authorities is required; this is a genuinely complex process and needs specialist handling, not a DIY attempt.
  • Medication: personal quantities only, and only for documented medical needs, with prescription evidence.
  • Audio-visual equipment: must be declared individually, by make and model, because of the port X-ray process described above.
  • Alcohol: strictly regulated; expect scrutiny and potential duty on anything beyond a modest personal quantity.
  • Recently purchased items: anything bought within roughly 6 months of your shipment date may be assessed for duty separately from the Transfer of Residence relief, since it doesn’t meet the “used personal effects” test.

Prohibited outright

  • Narcotics and controlled substances
  • Counterfeit goods
  • Agricultural products, soil, and plant material- Argentina enforces biosecurity rules strictly at the border
  • Material that could be deemed politically, socially, or religiously sensitive – Argentine customs retains discretion here, and it’s genuinely applied

The practical rule: if you’re not sure whether something is allowed, declare it. An item that turns out to be fine causes no delay. An undeclared item that gets flagged causes considerably more.

Frequently Asked Questions

British passport holders can enter Argentina without a visa for up to 90 days as a tourist. For a permanent move you’ll need a temporary residency visa – the most common categories are salaried employment, independent work (rentista), or the digital nomad visa for remote workers employed outside Argentina. Processing typically takes 3–6 months, so it’s worth starting this well before your removal date.

Used personal effects are generally imported duty-free under Argentina’s Transfer of Residence relief, provided you’ve owned and used the items for at least 6 months and can demonstrate prior UK residency. You also need to have been legally resident in Argentina for at least 6 months for full relief to apply, so the timing of your shipment relative to your residency start date matters. New items, or anything bought shortly before the move, may be assessed for duty separately.

A shared container (groupage) shipment typically takes 16–20 weeks door-to-door once customs clearance is included, while a dedicated full container load (FCL) is somewhat faster at 14–18 weeks. Customs clearance in Argentina, including the mandatory port X-ray inspection, can add 2–4 weeks beyond the standard transit window. Build in a buffer rather than planning around the fastest-case estimate.

It’s legally possible but rarely economical. Import duty runs to around 35% of the vehicle’s declared value, which on a typical family car adds several thousand pounds before registration and roadworthiness inspection costs. Most UK movers sell their car before leaving and buy locally in Argentina, where the used car market is well supplied – it’s usually only worth shipping a vehicle with genuine sentimental or collector value.

You’ll need an ISO-standard microchip, an up-to-date rabies vaccination, an official health certificate issued by a UK Official Veterinarian via APHA within 10 days of travel, and an import permit from SENASA, Argentina’s agricultural health authority. There’s no mandatory quarantine for cats and dogs from the UK provided the paperwork is in order. Allow 6–8 weeks to complete the process, and ask your move manager to refer you to a specialist pet relocator, since this runs on a separate track from your household shipment.

Narcotics, counterfeit goods, and agricultural products or plant material are prohibited outright. Firearms, ammunition, and personal medication require specific permits or prescription documentation. Audio-visual equipment must be individually declared with make and model, since it’s the most common trigger for physical inspection after the mandatory port X-ray. If you’re unsure whether something is allowed, declare it – undeclared items cause far more delay than declared items that turn out to be fine.
